Sin In My Heart - In Tribute to Siouxsie & The Banshees
The track Spellbound got my attention. But it was the song Sin In My Heart (both of those tracks from 1981's JuJu) that made me fall in love with Siouxsie & The Banshees... I was at a party when I heard it the first time. From those stilted opening chords and sound of smashing glass, to Budgie's incredible work on drums, I connected with its dark brooding intensity. The beats of percussion were frantic as Siouxsie flawlessly kept up with the melodies ever-quickening pace, her voice souring along with the tribal rhythms of drums, guitar and bass. It sounded like a rallying war cry. I shut my eyes as I felt the song move with me - my shoulders moved in time with McGeoch's guitar, my hips swayed and writhed along with Siouxsie’s vocals, my feet kept up with that echoing bass and unrelenting beat of drums, as my hair fell all over my sweat-slicked face. Like all great songs, it channeled this primal energy. A more in-depth piece is to come on one of the most groundbreaking female musicians and bands to ever emerge from dark-wave (just as seminal as The Cure - Juju would help inspire Robert Smith to push the boundaries of 1982's Pornography, also leading to his joining the band in 83'). But for now, I pay tribute in the smallest of ways.
It's kinda cool what a petite gal like me can do with an oversized mens band tee by taking to it with a pair of scissors. I then paired it with a black tulle skirt and a pair of vintage 1980's heels found for $7 (unworn in over 30 years). Dior mascara and my favourite Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture lipstick in infamous shade #7, with matching rose earrings and mesh choker (also thrifted for $1 each). Had it been Winter, I would have thrown on a leather biker jacket... it's an outfit that would have easily been at home in post-punk 1980's London.
This year has been challenging in so many ways... here are some photo's of me feeling lovely as a sweet princess of the dark-wave underworld.
